I was inspired by the beautiful designs of these black and white flash cards I have for my son. I loved how the animals seemed to glow against the sky.
Then came the next test as this would be the first canvas that I shipped. All went well!
When my business was in the beginning stages my aunt showed interest in getting one for my cousin Crosheena. I was really excited to do this since it would be my first real test of doing a belly from a digital image. I emailed Crosheena and had her email me a picture and we discussed a theme. She a wanted a jungle theme. I was inspired by the beautiful designs of these black and white flash cards I have for my son. I loved how the animals seemed to glow against the sky. When Chelsea came to my house to be traced, I asked what she would like to see on her belly. She said it was up to me. That is really tough to decide and hope that a person likes it. I had to rework it so many times. I am really happy with this one. Since she is a fellow Navy wife and from my hometown I finally decided to go Navy with a little bit of Michigan thrown in. Her husband is attached to the USS Eisenhower, which is an aircraft carrier. The beach was a must, in the Navy you are always near water but growing up in Michigan, a lake was never too far away. The light house itself is inspired by one I frequented in South Haven, MI. Discussing doing this painting wasn't hard. I had Sabrina over early in the spring so I could pass on some of my pumpkin’s clothing. She took one look at my painting and said she wanted one for her shower. Jump to about 4 months later and here I am working on her painting. She wanted a sunset but couldn't decide if dolphins were the way to go or a tree like mine. Also she wanted me to extend the scene to outside the belly. I decided to go with Mangrove Trees. My brother is currently in Hawaii and had taken pictures of them. Trees that grow in water, how perfect! I taped off the side that is not the silhouette so her form really pops from the canvas. I chose the night on the other side to make the sunset really pop and to almost give in a yin yang effect. 3 trees equal Mommy, Daddy and baby. Not too long ago we were living in a tiny apartment in Illinois. I was working for Walgreens and my husband was completing his first year in the Navy. I found out I was pregnant in March, we knew we were having a boy by May. I am an artist, and I wanted to have something beautiful to show my son how happy I was to be pregnant with him. So I made a silhouette inspired from Art Bellies but I went a step further. It was one of the few days I felt really good during my whole pregnancy. So that day we had our maternity photo shoot, I started my silhouette, made a plaster cast of my belly and decorated my belly for Halloween. Yeah my actual belly. Its a picture and a moment I will always treasure. I did not tell my husband what I was doing until I yell for him to help me do the mouth on my pumpkin. I couldn't reach the underside of my belly. It was a good laugh. Then I asked him to help me trace my belly on to the canvas I purchased earlier that week. I decided to do a leafless tree in a sun set. It was fall and all of my baby things were becoming fall themed since he was due the first week of November. Little did I know making these things would lead to New Life in Color as I know it today. |
